If you’re a fan of The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews, you would’ve been singing along. But this entry on our blog is not about music (or the sound of it), it is about everyone’s favorite things. More specifically, everyone’s favorite tool. We also did a little research on personalities and found a well-researched series of studies that led to the creation of 16personalities.
As such, we’ll be attempting to tie some of these personality types to tools used in everyday life and in the field service industry. So, last check for grabbing your favorite tool and preparation to find out what it means below! Onwards!
We didn’t want to just focus on tools that are used in the field. That would mean alienating everyday people. So we listed down a few common ones, so that everyone is included. Cue Leonardo DiCaprio’s pointing meme from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The tools range from those used in the HVAC industry to ones that you might just find in the drawer with random stuff you said you’d clean and organize last week.
Searching high and low (on Google pages), we decided to use a rather simplistic version of 16personalities personality styles. Ranging from the Architect (INTJ) to Protagonist (ENFJ), we attempt to pair these personalities to the tools we’ve listed down below to give you (and ourselves) a brief insight on what makes you tick.
You can find 16personalities on their website to give you a little introduction before we start (we’ll wait here, don’t worry).
Of course, before we dive in, we just want to remind you that this entry is semi-educational and semi-fun. Please refrain from taking it too seriously and visit the provided sources for more comprehensive information regarding personality traits.
Right off the bat, we go with a less common tool; an anemometer. It is a tool used to measure wind pressure against a surface. Think of it as a measuring device to see how the wind is affecting a particular surface. Based on the good people behind Davis, it is used by anyone who is interested in weather—that includes drone fliers, ship captains, and helicopter pilots. Quite a jump from licking your finger and holding it up against the wind, right?
Now, for those who favor anemometers above other tools, they are Advocates. Based on 16personalities, Advocates are people who consider deep thoughtfulness and imagination when approaching life. What guides them in life are their inner vision, personal values, and a quiet, principled version of humanism. Imagine The Thinker sculpture but in the middle of the ocean, finding the way through rough seas into calmer waters. Advocates are deeply rooted to where they are, physically and psychologically.
Personality Insight: Advocates don’t tend to like joining friendly competitions amongst friends.
The good ol’ camera, be it digital or analog, goes way back to the times right when paintings were still the norm of capturing life’s essence. Some said it was cheating the art of brushing paint onto canvas, bringing life. Some said it merely blossomed into an art form of its own. Whether you are the former or the latter, the camera has immortalized much of life and graced many an album in our parents’ homes.
Favorers of the camera are Adventurers. Those who are willing to go into the world and capture the fleeting moments that most of us miss, or those who are handy enough with timing to manage to capture moments that will miss in the future looking back. Adventurers have open minds and warmth, allowing them to stay in the moment to uncover and capture it. Dare we take a jab that those who favor the camera and working in the field service industry actually do photography as a hobby? Adventurers make every moment count.
Personality Insight: You won’t normally see Adventurers influencing the actions of others.
A clinometer is a device used to measure an object’s angle of slope, elevation, or depression. Think trees, slopes on the sides of mountains, and distant objects (like the sun). One of the famous uses was by Al-Biruni, a scholar and polymath, where he attempted to measure the height of the sun. Nowadays, clinometers are used by skiers, winter hikers, trail builders, cave surveyors, amongst many others.
For those who love the clinometer, be it for its relative to gravity or rich history of beating the odds and arguing against current understandings, they have the personality of the Debater. Debaters are creative and bold as they deconstruct and rebuild ideas with mental agility. Their drive to achieve their goals, despite resistances, is what defines them the most. Think of trailblazers who brave the wilderness to pave a safe path for all. Debaters challenge the norm with their drive for change.
Personality Insight: Debaters are good on their feet and are most likely to control conversations, even if the topic is alien to them.
Simply put, field manuals or service manuals are comprehensive guides written to provide extensive instructions on how to use, troubleshoot, and repair a certain product. Think The Holy Bible, but for equipment or tools or hardware. Remember all those times you bought a new device, and it comes with little booklets. That’s what they are, in the simplest forms. But of course the manuals used by field workers are more comprehensive than the what the average consumer gets.
The people who love their field manuals are Logisticians, not to be confused with the Logician (INTP), though. Logisticians are individuals who stay in the background but willful. They have an overall rational way of looking at life. Everything that they do is calculated and methodical. Remember Edna “E” Mode from The Incredibles? Everything a Logistician does is perfect, or at least they attempt it every time.
Personality Insight: Logisticians will never admit that their way of learning has changed over the years because it never has.
Did you know that the first flashlights could only project light periodically, not consistently, like the way they do nowadays? This was because back during its first conception, flashlights (or electric torches, as they were called) had limited access to available power from the batteries used and because of the type of switch used. Today, you can get flashlights with high lumen counts that could mirror the lighting power of the sun.
If your favorite tool out on the field is the flashlight, then you are a Defender—warm and dedicated protectors, at-the-ready to defend those they care about the most. You are likely responsible and efficient in your own steady ways, akin to flashlight wielding monks in robes policing the stars from and during intergalactic wars. Defenders are unassuming, understated, and often found helping to make the world go round. They shed light on things that matter and when it matters.
Personality Insight: In a large group, be it friends or acquaintances, Defenders won’t speak up if they disagree with everyone else.
Anything that has a Global Positioning System (GPS) can be considered as a geo-locator, be it a smartphone or a dedicated device (like in a vehicle’s navigation interface). Geo-locators help provide positioning, navigation, and timing for users with the help of satellites. DId you know that GPS was originally known as Navstar GPS? It’s a utility system owned by the United States Space Force.
You are seen as a Campaigner if your favorite tool is a geo-locator. Campaigners are people who go for big ideas and efforts that inspire a sense of goodwill and hope, often coming from themselves. They emit vibrant energy and vibes that flow in many directions—an apt pairing of tool and personality, we take it. Maps, globes, terrain documents are what Campaigners vibe with the most. See an army general overlooking a large map, plotting for the next attack and defensive move.
Personality Insight: Campaigners always look at the bigger picture for the betterment of the people around him.
In the simplest way, a management software helps plan, organize, and manage resources. In a less simple way, it is a computer program coded to assist with the management of all moving and non-moving parts within an organizational system already put in place. With the advancement of technology, management software can also be found in the form of apps installed on mobile phones. Take FieldEx and our field service management software: using our management software helps you to automate tasks, schedule jobs, and maximize productivity to drive revenue growth, all within a single platform.
Choosing a management software as your favorite tool out on the field shows us that you are a Protagonist—forthright, warm, always helping others. You have strong ideas and values and back these up with creative energy to drive forward change. Think Spider-Man making split-second decisions fighting the Sinister Six. Most Protagonists feel the call to serve a greater purpose in life, whether it’s saving the good people of Queens, New York, or getting everything organized and running smoothly for everyone in the company.
Personality Insight: You are most likely at the forefront in creating opportunities for other people to strive in their field.
A measuring tape is usually a long and flexible ruler used to measure length or distance. They can come in the form of a ribbon of metal strip, fibreglass, plastic, or cloth and have linear measurement markings. Nowadays, you can use your mobile phone as a form of measuring tape through an app, though the reliability of such an application remains debatable. Color us traditionalists.
Measuring tape fans are Logicians. They tend to be flexible thinkers who enjoy taking the unconventional approaches to life’s problems. You will find Logicians marrying their willingness to solve problems to their own personal form of creativity and producing an offspring that solves most problems a majority of people thought were unsolvable. Take Indiana Jones and how he solves problems, boulders and face-melting liquid included. Logicians get the job done, often by thinking outside the box.
Personality Insight: You will never catch a Logician using emojis in their digital chats with you.
You are most likely on a mobile phone right now, reading this lengthy article, and most likely listening to music we suggested in a previous article we’ve written. What we’re getting at is that you know already what mobile phones and music players are, so let’s cut straight to the chase, shall we?
You are an Entrepreneur if you love your mobile phone or music player above the other tools you have and use. You see life like Hellen Keller; you see it as either a daring adventure or nothing at all. Entrepreneurs are energetic and action oriented, seen swerving and swirling through and around whatever is put up against them. See Bruce Willis is Die Hard, crawling through the vents, talking about the coast and having a few laughs. If you are an Entrepreneur, you finding every opportunity possible.
Personality Insight: You and technology go hand in hand (pun intended) as you are always reaching for that bleeding edge advancement and how it can change and improve daily life.
Stop! Hammer Time! But before you bust a move, we have to cover what a stopwatch is. Then, we both can tear it up on the dance floor, or field, whatever floats your boat. So, a stopwatch, for those who don’t know fully, is a device that gauges the span of time elapsed from activation to deactivation. We’re sure you’ve seen it before in football matches, in the hands of grumpy teachers in exam halls, what have you.
Now, if your most favorite tool out on the field is the stopwatch, then you’re an Executive. You are courageous and sensible in your judgement. You are the kindred spirit of the likes of Dwight Schrute, Claire Dunphy, and Boromir Son of Denethor. And if fictional characters don’t tickle your fancy, you share the same personality with John D. Rockefeller, Ella Baker, and Frank Sinatra. Executives lead the way with their stabilizing force and deterministic values to ensure a true direction through adversity.
Personality Insight: Alongside braving the world and its problems, Executives will never be caught drifting away daydreaming or fantasizing about ideas and scenarios.
We’ve come near the end of this long article with 10 personality-tool pairings. There are 6 other personalities we’re leaving you to discover yourselves. God speed!
With this break before the conclusion, allow us to share our thoughts about the human condition—that we are all multidimensional beings not tethered to a single personality but to a stream of constant changes through life. This article may act as a guide for all of you to pinpoint what your personalities are, perhaps even to explore more of what you have.
Because if there is anything constant in nature (and in the nature of human beings), it is that everything always changes. Be like water. Be flowing. Be multidimensional and not let yourself be adhered to a single position. That is all we have to say about that.
And that’s it! You’ve gotten this far and no one can be prouder than us! At FieldEx, we value both the thinkers and the dreamers, the Logicians and the Adventurers. For what is a foundation without a ceiling? See you on the next one!
